Global Commons Foundation

The Global Commons Foundation is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco with a membership of individuals across the world. Global Commons concerns itself with antisystemic movements and with thinkers, activists, and cultural workers actively engaged in defining and creating imaginative and sustainable alternatives to the current world system, which we understand to be in a state of crisis, and to the knowledge systems that comprise it. Indeed it takes as one its guiding concerns the engagement with alternatives in the production, reproduction, and distribution of knowledge. It recognizes that these alternatives, this cognitive justice, is both prerequisite and partner to the creation of more just and democratic social structures and societies.

Global Commons fosters activities, projects, and networks that advance such radical lines of inquiry and action, privileging perspectives from the Global South, but by no means excluding voices and perspectives from the North, and emphasizing dialogue across disciplines and practices, and across geographies, cultures, economies, and political systems.

Global Commons operates as a collective and as a network, through collaborations with like-minded groups, institutions, and comrades worldwide.

Programs and activities in San Francisco and globally encompass but are not limited to the following:
- Panel discussion series in San Francisco, in various locations
- Colloquia, conferences, and other gatherings; film showings, art exhibits and other cultural and media events.
- Longer term research projects, working groups, and programs
- Retreats for activists and activist intellectuals, artists, cultural workers, and journalists for the purposes of focused thought, networking, and planning
- Social movement-oriented educational programs and radical pedagogical structures
- Publications and translations

Global Commons actively participates in global social movement networks, particularly the World Social Forum.
